Essbase ("extended spreadsheet database") is a multidimensional database management system that provides a database platform for building analytic applications.
Query Interface
Essbase exposes a multidimensional query interface centered on the MDX (Multidimensional Expressions) language, which is used to query, analyze, and export data and metadata from cubes. Applications typically interact with Essbase through MDX over the XML for Analysis (XMLA) protocol. Users issue queries via Oracle Smart View, an Excel add-in that provides ad hoc grid retrieval and MDX execution from within spreadsheets. Users can also use MaxL scripts and other MDX-capable clients to embed cube queries into analytic workflows.
