IMS

IBM Information Management System (IMS) is a hierarchical database management system and transaction processing subsystem designed for z/OS. It provides data storage, retrieval, and online transaction processing capabilities for enterprise applications.

History[04][05]

Development began in 1966 to manage the bill of materials for the Apollo program's Saturn V rocket and spacecraft. The first version, known as ICS/DL/I, was completed in 1967 for the IBM System/360 Model 65 and officially installed at North American Rockwell in August 1968. IBM renamed the system IMS/360 in 1969 and subsequently evolved it alongside successive generations of IBM mainframes. IMS has undergone continuous updates for more than five decades and remains in active development today.
