Trino is a distributed SQL query engine designed to run on disparate storage systems.
History[05]
In January 2019, the original developers of PrestoDB forked off the project and create a separate system called PrestoSQL. This was in response to Facebook maintaining control of the original PrestoDB codebase. PrestoSQL was controlled by the non-profit Presto Software Foundation.
In September 2019, Facebook turned over control of the PrestoDB project to a new non-profit called the Presto Foundation that was part of the Linux Foundation.
To avoid naming confusion, PrestoSQL was renamed to Trino in December 2020.
