The system originally started in 1988 as the Versant Object Database (VOD). It was designed to persist complex object graphs natively. The product underwent corporate transitions, including acquisitions by Computer Associates and CA Technologies. Following the merger of Actian and CA Technologies, it was rebranded as Actian NoSQL Object Database and remains part of the Actian product portfolio.
