UniVerse was started in 1984 by VMark Software as a Unix-based implementation inspired by the Pick database model. VMark subsequently expanded UniVerse into an "extended relational" DBMS with SQL support while retaining its original multi-value data model. In 1997, VMark merged with the UniData Corporation, developer of the competing UniData database, and the combined company was renamed Ardent Software; UniVerse and UniData remained separate products within Ardent’s portfolio.
In 2000, Informix acquired Ardent Software but then the following year, IBM acquired Informix’s database business, including UniVerse and UniData, and marketed the two systems together as its U2 database family. UniVerse remained with IBM until October 2009, when Rocket Software acquired IBM’s UniVerse, UniData, and related U2 products, ending IBM’s ownership and establishing what became Rocket’s MultiValue database business.
