History

Founded in 1998 by Bruce Scott (a co-founder of Oracle and Gupta Technologies), Jeff Richey, and Daren Race, PointBase Inc. developed a pure Java database optimized for small footprints and seamless Java compatibility. The company was initially established in San Mateo, California, and later relocated to Mountain View. In the early 2000s, PointBase gained widespread visibility when Sun Microsystems bundled a restricted version of it with the J2EE Software Development Kit. DataMirror acquired PointBase in 2003 to enhance its real-time data integration offerings. IBM subsequently acquired DataMirror in September 2007. Separately, following Oracle's acquisition of BEA Systems in 2008, the historical bundling of PointBase within the WebLogic Server ecosystem was eventually phased out in favor of Oracle's own database solutions and Derby.
