Relational database management system developed by Digital Equipment Corporation for the OpenVMS operating system on VAX and Alpha AXP architectures. It provides SQL-based data management for transaction processing and enterprise workloads.[04]

History[04]

Development began at DEC's Systems Research Center in the early 1980s. The product was commercially released in 1984 for VAX systems. Subsequent versions added support for Alpha processors and enhanced SQL compliance. Following DEC's acquisition by Compaq in 1998 and HP in 2006, Rdb/VMS remained part of the OpenVMS software suite. In 2017, HP transferred OpenVMS and Rdb to VMS Software Inc., which continues maintenance under the Oracle Rdb branding.
