History

Originally released in 1984 as Progress 4GL with an integrated database engine, the platform was rebranded to OpenEdge in the early 2000s. The programming language was renamed to OpenEdge Advanced Business Language (ABL) in 2006 to reflect expanded capabilities beyond traditional fourth-generation development. Development has continued with regular releases adding SQL support, cloud deployment options, and modern application integration features while maintaining backward compatibility.
