History
Development began in the 1980s at the Technical University of Munich under the name Merkur, led by Rudolf Bayer. Transaction Software GmbH was founded in 1987 to commercialize the project. The system was renamed Transbase in 1989. It saw extensive adoption in the automotive industry for parts management and documentation. Subsequent releases added ports to multiple operating systems, distributed query processing, full-text search capabilities, and multi-language support.
