Xata is a cloud-native, open-source PostgreSQL platform built on Kubernetes for managing multiple database instances. It provides copy-on-write storage branching, scale-to-zero compute, auto-scaling, and high availability. The system targets development workflows, preview environments, testing, and AI agent workloads that require isolated databases with production-like data.

History
Xata was founded in 2020 as a managed PostgreSQL service. It later transitioned to an open-source, cloud-native platform designed for Kubernetes, introducing copy-on-write branching and scale-to-zero capabilities to support rapid database cloning for development and AI workloads.
The system originally started as a service built on top of Amazon Aurora. They switched to a custom PostgreSQL system in 2025.
